2/19/2008 – Safe at Home training
_________________________________________________
The Safe at Home program is a vital
service for survivors of domestic violence, rape, sexual assault, or
stalking, who have relocated or are
about to relocate, that helps keep their assailants from finding them.
The Safe at Home program provides
for a designated address to use
when creating new records with state and local agencies and the
courts, and acts as a mail forwarding service. These services limit an
assailant’s ability to access public information which could identify
the new location of a survivor who is in the program.
Safe at Home is not a witness
protection program; rather it is a mail forwarding service.

is Stalking Awareness Month
_________________________________________________________
January is National Stalking Awareness Month, and victim
advocates throughout the country are using this month as an opportunity to
educate the public about the pervasive crime that affects nearly 1.4 million
Americans a year.
Stalking—defined by
Missouri
law as purposely, repeatedly and intentionally harassing or following
someone—is a criminal offense under the laws of all 50 states, the
District of
Columbia
,
and the federal government. Although its prevalence is high, public awareness
that stalking is a crime remains dangerously low. One in 12 women and one in
45 men will be stalked in their lifetime, for an average duration of almost
two years.1 Seventy-six percent of women
who were murdered by their intimate partner had been previously stalked by
the killer, and more than half of these victims reported the stalking to the
police before being murdered.

funding to domestic violence shelters in
Missouri
has forced us to close our
Resource
Center
and tighten our
budget. This funding cut, along with the increased cost of providing
transportation and shelter for clients, has left AVENUES with a need to raise
$20,000, just to maintain the services it already provides...(continues)
